One of our local Pittsburgh midwives, Nancy Niemczyk, recently wrote about seven reasons why the new health law will benefit birthing women. I found her very persuasive. I liked all her points, check them out! My favorite was the elimination of denial of health insurance for the pre-existing conditions of pregnancy and cesarean birth and being a victim of domestic violence.
I was unable to get health insurance after my son was born because I had the pre-existing condition of having been pregnant within seven years! They actually said that if a woman had been pregnant withing seven years it was a pre-existing condition for becoming pregnant again and a reason not to insure her. Being uninsured kept me from having a second child. I am looking forward to the new health care law.
