Pennsylvania Stops Birth Shackling

As scary as it sounds, just this month Governor Ed Rendell stopped birthing mothers in Pennsylvania prisons from having to wear shackles by signing Senate Bill 1074. Only Seven other states allow birthing mothers in prison to be shackle-free. It makes me cry to write this. All the states should follow this example. Imagine a child born between shackles! I’m so glad we stopped this inhumane practice.

WOW! Crazy that this is going on. Good for Rendell!!! Just because the mother is being punished we should NOT be punishing the innocent babies, they deserve to be born with dignity. And the mother, whatever her crime, deserves to birth like a human being, not like a chained up animal. I completely agree, that practice is inhumane. I hope other states follow and get rid of that.
